Biography

I am a laboratory manager at BAS with responsibility for the biological specimens storage facilities (-80°C, -20°C, +4°C and preserved specimen storage) and various laboratory facilities and services including elemental (CHN) analysis.

I have spent 8 summers and 2 winters in Antarctica, first over-wintering at Rothera Research Station from November 1998 to March 2001 as terrestrial biology field research assistant (spectroradiometry, micro-meteorological stations, controlled environment facilities, field collections & laboratory management).

1993-1996: Institute of Terrestrial Ecology (now CEH), Bangor, Air Pollution and Climate Change Section – Air Pollution Research Facilities Manager (hardware and software engineering, data analysis, ecophysiology).

1986-1993: Research Assistant at the University of Nottingham Sutton Bonington Campus, Department of Physiology and Environmental Science – from 1986-1991 as an Air Pollution Exposure Systems Technician (primarily control systems hardware and software engineering, data analysis, ecophysiology) and from 1991-1993 as statistician and analyst for a European (UNECE)  programme on the effects of ozone pollution on crops.

1984-1986: NERC funded research studentship at Loughborough University of Technology Environmental Biology Unit looking at reproductive strategies and population differentiation in Cladocera using genetically determined enzyme polymorphism.

1980-1983: Loughborough University of Technology, Department of Human Sciences BSc degree in Animal and Plant Ecology.
