Manchester Science Festival – Fashion and the Antarctic
- This event has passed.
Fashion designer Andrea Zapp will be exhibiting her unique garments which use British Antarctic Survey (BAS) data and imagery, as part of Manchester Science Festival.
The free exhibition – Ice Queens: Fashion and the Antarctic – runs from 18 to 20 and 23 to 27 October at St Anne’s Church. The highly visual display explores the collaboration between British Antarctic Survey and Zapp, who is a Senior Research Fellow at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Take the opportunity to explore how clothing can be used to convey scientific data from wind speeds to animal migration patterns. Zapp’s windbreaker style garments include data on movement and breeding activity patterns of two seabirds, provided by Dr Richard Phillips. Other designs utilise imagery taken by BAS photographer Pete Bucktrout for monitoring purposes of the Adelie and Macaroni penguins.
