Antarctica Day is marked on December 1st to commemorate the day, in 1959, when the Antarctic Treaty was signed.  The treaty originally had 12 signatories who pledged their commitment to maintaining the continent of Antarctica as a place of peace and scientific research. According to the text of the Treaty, it was intended to guarantee that ‘…Antarctica shall continue for ever to be used exclusively for peaceful purposes and shall not become the scene or object of international discord’.

A further 43 nations have joined the treaty system as partners.

Happy Antarctica Day!
