Lower thermospheric wind measurements near 60° Λ from 5577Å Doppler interferometry
Fabry-Perot interferometer measurements of the Doppler shift of the 5577Å O1S emission are used to derive neutral wind velocities at E-region altitudes over Halley, Antarctica (Λ=61°). These measurements, recorded during the Lower Thermosphere Coupling Study (LTCS) period in September 1987, show relatively large amplitude oscillatory wind fields of ∼50–100 ms−1 during geomagnetically quiet periods but remarkably low wind velocities during geomagnetically active periods (∼10 ms−1). A brief interpretation of these observations is presented.
