A cautionary note on data transformation: bias in back-transformed means

When data are transformed for statistical analysis bias occurs when backtransforming means to the untransformed scale. The bias can produce grossly misleading conclusions. Anomalous results of two different analyses are reconciled by allowing for bias and the reliability of the methods is assessed using computer simulation.
